Oscar Salazar Zuñiga, percussionist
Born in the State of Mexico, he started his music studies in 1994 under Professor José Luis Barquera at the Music Conservatory in the State of Mexico, and graduating with Honors in 2001 for obtaining his Licentiate in Percussions.
He studied with internationally recognized teachers, like Jean Pierre at the Mc Gill Conservatory of Music (Montreal, Canada); Anthony González at the Julliard School of Music; Daniel Druckman, Christopher S. Lamb and Roland Kohloff of the New York Philharmonic; Vadim Karpinos, James Ross, Chynthia Yeh, Patricia Dash and Donald Koss of the Chicago Symphony; Paul Yancich and Marc Damoulakis from the Cleveland Orchestra; John Tafoya, Professor at the Indiana University, and Christopher Devine, Percussionist of the Philadelphia Philharmonic Orchestra.
As for the Marimba, he took lessons with such famous Marimba interpreters as See-Wu, Nancy Zeltsman, Nebojza Jovan Zivkovic, Takako Nagano, Momoko Tamiya, Katarzyna Mycka, Ludwig Albert and Gordon Stout.
He obtained 2 Second and 2 Third places in the four occasions he took part in the Concurso Nacional de Marimba which takes place in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas.
The Orquesta Filarmónica del Estado de Querétaro has had him interpreting Paul Creston’s Concert for Marimba and Orchestra; William Kraft’s Concert for Timpani and Orchestra, premiered in Mexico. He interpreted Claude Bolling’s Suite with the Jazz Trio. In March 2009, the Latin American Premiere of the No. 1 Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra by Nebojza J. Zivkovic, and in March 2010, John Beck’s Timpani Concerto and the Multi-Percussion Concert by Darius Milhaud.
He was granted a scholarship by the Instituto Queretano para la Cultura y las Artes, to tour the State of Querétaro playing a series of didactic concerts, and also received the grant offered by the Support Program to Artistic Production, which enabled him to record his first CD with Mexican Music interpreted in Marimba.
