Capella Antiqua de Guadalajara

Lieds with their lyric songs; Oratorios in which cantatas, motets or mass are sung, and the Opera, constitute the working structure of the Capella Antiqua. It was founded by Maestro Flavio Becerra, and from the very beginning of his group he has conducted it and gives workshops on them.

This musical scope is certainly neither the result of improvisation nor of eventual opportunities, but is solidly grounded in its historical background.

Capella Antiqua de Guadalajara, has appeared on the most important scenarios in the state of Jalisco, not only in the capital city, but also in other parts of the State and cities such as Colima, Querétaro, Irapuato, Guanajuato; Maravatío, La Piedad and Zamora, in Michoacán; Culiacán, Sinaloa; Oaxaca, and Aguascalientes, that have enjoyed the quality of this group of singers.

In Mexico City, they have appeared at the Pinacoteca Virreinal, Centro Nacional de las Artes, MUNAL, Palacio de Arzobispado and the Sala Manuel M. Ponce. The perfection of their renditions only adds to their history of excellence within the vocal groups in the State of Jalisco.

Ariel Ramírez (1921 – 2010)

This Argentinian composer and pianist was born in Sante Fe. When he was very young he traveled to Córdoba, touring through the north of Argentina with Atahualpa Yupanqui; he lived for some time in Mendoza, finally reaching Buenos Aires where he was more active as a pianist.

He studied at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música, and between 1946 and 1956 he recorded around 20 records that included his own compositions, as La Tristecita, and developing his own music and dance company.

During the decades of the 60s and 70s, he wrote his most important compositions: Navidad nuestra, Mujeres Argentinas (using popular theme songs as Alfonsina y el Mar, and Juana Azurduy), Cantata sudamericana, Misa por La Paz y la Justicia, and what is considered as his best work, La Misa Criolla (1964). This mass, in particular, has been the most interpreted Argentinian mass all over the world, and the one with more versions based on Argentine folklore roots.

In addition to his pianist and composer activities, Ariel Ramírez was reelected five times as President of the Sociedad Argentina de Autores y Compositores, SADAIC, until 2004. He passed away on February 18, 2010, at Montegrande, in Buenos Aires.
